Newark
The city of Newark is Delaware’s version of a great American “college town,” with the University of Delaware’s main campus nestled directly in the middle of the city.
Easily the largest institution of higher learning in the state, the University of Delaware draws students from several states in the mid-Atlantic, as well as from all corners of the First State.
The University boasts several famous graduates, the most popular today being Joe Flacco, the Super Bowl winning quarterback of the Baltimore Ravens, women’s basketball star Elena Delle Donne, and former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden.
Newark is actually located halfway between the cities of Philadelphia and Baltimore and was settled in 1694 by settlers from Scotland and Ireland. It’s also near “The Wedge,” the point where the states of Delaware, Maryland and Pennsylvania meet.

Historically speaking, Newark’s claim to fame during the Revolutionary War was that the Stars and Stripes was flown in battle for the very first time at the Battle of Cooch’s Bridge, just outside the city.
Newark boasts several thousand acres of public parkland, including the areas of Iron Hill Park and the nearby White Clay Creek State Park.
Recreational activities in Newark revolve around the University, with many top-notch events held regularly at the Bob Carpenter Center.
As with most college towns in America, there are plenty of restaurants and bars that cater to the younger demographic. But several other eateries are also featured, as well as tax-free shopping and easy access to Philadelphia and points north via Interstate 95.
