10 Top Reasons for Living in the 'Nation's Summer Capital' of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware

After mentions in several regional and national publications over the last few years, more and more people are learning about the gem that is coastal Delaware. We, of course, think it’s great that the word is getting out – this is truly a wonderful place to live and work.

But it’s one thing to say great things about the place where you live. It’s another thing entirely to substantiate those feelings, and that’s what we’re going to do today.

We love Rehoboth Beach and we know you do to, or you soon will. But what is it that makes Delaware’s favorite seaside paradise such a great place?

Well, we’re going to tell you right now.

Here are our top ten reasons why you should live in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, counting down from number 10 to our absolute favorite thing about life in this fabulous coastal city.

10. The Size

Rehoboth is not an excessively large beach town, and we like it that way. With Rehoboth Proper being just one square mile, it’s small and intimate enough to allow neighbors the chance to get to know each other and build lasting relationships.

But with all of the excitement of Route 1 just around the corner, there’s also plenty to do whenever the mood strikes.

9. The Festivals

Rehoboth Beach is never short of fun things to do, and there are several festivals each year that are looked forward to by the community.

These include the 4th of July celebration, the Polar Bear Plunge every February and the signature Sea Witch Halloween and Fiddler’s Festival every October.

8. The History

As with much of southern Delaware, Rehoboth Beach is ripe with history. Dating back to its origins as a Methodist retreat and campground, you can practically feel the history at every turn.

And if you want to examine the history of Delaware’s favorite beach town further, visit the Rehoboth Museum on Rehoboth Avenue or the Anna Hazzard Museum on Christian Street.

7. The "Feel"

When you drive or walk into Rehoboth Beach, you can almost feel the tension and the stress leaving your body. I mean, you’re at the beach right?

Breathe in the salt air, and the smell of Thrasher’s French fries, then find a spot on the beach and just feel all the negative energy floating away.

6. The People

With residents who have moved to Rehoboth from several different states, the makeup of the city is certainly an eclectic one.

Add in a large and still growing LGBT community, a few hundred college students in the summertime, international workers and other ethnic groups, and Rehoboth is truly a unique place to call home.

5. The Tax-Free Shopping

Granted, this is not unique to Rehoboth Beach, as all of Delaware is sales tax-free.

But with wonderful shops along Rehoboth Avenue and the shopping paradise that is the Tanger Outlets on Route 1, the tax-free shopping is certainly a major draw to living in the “Nation’s Summer Capital.”

4. The Boardwalk

Ah, the Boardwalk. Though only one mile long from end to end, this long stretch of boards houses so much great stuff that it’s hard to mention it all.

From beach eats, to arcades, a couple of bars, fabulous hotels and, of course, the always popular Funland, the Rehoboth Boardwalk constantly ranks as one of the best small town boardwalks in America.

It’s the centerpiece of all the action during the summer months, and a major draw to Rehoboth Beach.

3. The View

Have you ever noticed the fabulous view from nearly every building in downtown Rehoboth Beach? It’s pretty awesome, right?

This is not by accident, but actually due to two separate regulations/decisions over the years. The first goes back to the city’s infancy when planners decided that Rehoboth Avenue should widen as it gets closer to the ocean, so more people could see the water.

The second is the decision to limit the height of buildings in Rehoboth to 42 feet, also so views of the ocean are not obstructed.

2. The Restaurant Scene

Rehoboth Beach has one of the most vibrant and eclectic restaurant environments of any small town in the mid-Atlantic.

Sure, there are chain restaurants and plenty of fast food options available. But the resort also features dozens of locally owned and operated eateries offering a wide variety of food choices.

Many places in downtown Rehoboth are owned by the chefs who actually prepare the food and are tucked away in small yet inviting buildings within an easy stroll of the Boardwalk.

1. The Beach

Well, our number one reason for living in Rehoboth Beach should come as a surprise to absolutely no one. The resort’s sandy shores are normally filled to capacity during the summer months, and for good reason.

In addition to the regular beachfront, there’s also a section of beach very popular with the LGBT community. And the ocean water just off the shoreline has continuously won awards for being some of the cleanest along the nation’s eastern seaboard.

Swimming, boating, surfing, skim boarding and parasailing are all popular activities you’ll see along the beach in Rehoboth.
