⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "It’s our pleasure to recommend Oldfather Group to anyone wanting to buy or sell their home. Being new to the area and after having an extremely frustrating experience with another reality group in the area, we decided to give Dustin and the Oldfather Group a try. From helping us decide on a listing price, to prescreening buyers, through all the negotiations, and then handling all the legal issues and paperwork our overall experience was excellent. Attention to detail was superb as well as their quick response time to all our questions and concerns. We had an administrative assistant assigned specifically to our contract which helped a lot. It’s certainly stating the obvious to say that southern Delaware has more than its fair share of beautiful coastline and spectacular beaches.
From the “nation’s summer capital” of <a href="https://www.theoldfathergroup.com/blog/moving-to-rehoboth-beach-delaware/?caa=true">Rehoboth Beach</a> to the historic charm of <a href="https://www.theoldfathergroup.com/lewes-homes-for-sale/">Lewes</a> and the “quiet resorts” of <a href="https://www.theoldfathergroup.com/bethany-beach-oceanfront-homes-for-sale/">Bethany Beach </a>and <a href="https://www.theoldfathergroup.com/fenwick-island-homes-for-sale/">Fenwick Island</a>, the First State excels in offering residents and visitors alike an eclectic choice of fun, relaxing, and even exciting coastal resorts.
But where do you go if you want to enjoy some solitude and some “me time,” far away from the hustle and bustle of the main beach resorts in Delaware and neighboring Maryland?
Well, you have a few choices of how to get away from the crowds while still enjoying some relaxing beach time.
First, you can go to Delaware's main beaches during the “off-season,” when things are typically quieter and you'll likely have no trouble finding a secluded spot all to yourself.
Secondly, you can try going early in the morning, before things really start picking up for the day. Put down your towel, watch the sun come up over the ocean, and take a few deep breaths while soaking it all in. Sounds pretty good, right?
Or thirdly, and the topic of our blog post today, you can find a beach that's a little off the beaten path and isn’t overflowing with residents and visitors on a regular basis.
So, where can you find these secluded pieces of beach in Delaware and Maryland? Well, we’re glad you asked.
Today, we’re going to present you with a few area beaches where you can go to relax in southern Delaware & Maryland, without having to fight the crowds.
Here are ten secluded, less-crowded, and off-the-beaten path beaches in Delaware - and one in coastal Maryland - to get away from it all.

Broadkill Beach
When you think of <a href="https://www.theoldfathergroup.com/broadkill-beach-homes-for-sale/">Broadkill Beach</a>, the first thing that probably comes to mind is horseshoe crabs, right? Well, if you’ve ever been there, that is.
It's true that Broadkill Beach is an official sanctuary for the crabs which, incidentally, are the official state marine animals of Delaware. Bet you didn’t know that, did you?
Located approximately 20 miles north of Rehoboth Beach, on the shores of the Delaware Bay, the quiet beach town has become increasingly popular among visitors “in the know.” But there are still plenty of quiet places to throw down a beach towel and enjoy the peacefulness of the bay.
A major replenishment project was completed by the state of Delaware in 2016, making the beach even larger and giving visitors even more space to spend a relaxing summertime afternoon.
<a href="https://www.fws.gov/refuge/prime_hook/">Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge</a> is also located directly to the west, providing yet another reason to visit this peaceful community on the Delaware Bay.

Slaughter Beach
Yeah, we know – the name is a bit ominous. But don’t let it fool you, the town of <a href="https://www.theoldfathergroup.com/slaughter-beach-homes-for-sale/">Slaughter Beach</a> is actually one of the quietest and most peaceful coastal communities in Delaware.
There are only a couple of hundred residents of Slaughter Beach year-round, and really not that many more in the summer months. But it has a small, quiet beachfront nice enough to earn it a spot here on our list.
As with Broadkill Beach, Slaughter Beach is also a sanctuary for horseshoe crabs, which is not only Delaware’s official marine animal but also the official symbol of the town.
Slaughter Beach is located just south of Milford and the Kent County line, along the shores of the Delaware Bay.
Pickering Beach
You’re probably noticing a trend with the first few beach communities on our list, but here’s number three. Pickering Beach, like the two mentioned above, is also located on the shores of the <a href="https://www.theoldfathergroup.com/delaware-bay/">Delaware Bay</a> and is also an official sanctuary for horseshoe crabs.
Located in southern Kent County, Pickering Beach is a somewhat secluded piece of beachfront that doesn’t attract much attention from tourists, which makes it a perfect addition to our list of secluded beach communities.
And, as luck would have it, you can even purchase a home right now and claim a piece of Pickering Beach for your very own. The home pictured below is an Oldfather Group listing that you can read all about <a href="https://www.theoldfathergroup.com/blog/ever-want-your-own-private-beach-then-we-39-ve-got-good-news-for-you/">HERE</a>.
And for an overhead drone video of Pickering Beach, click below. There are lots of places to enjoy a quiet afternoon on the sandy shores of the Delaware Bay, here at Pickering Beach.
Bowers Beach
Also located along the Delaware Bay in <a href="https://www.theoldfathergroup.com/kent-county-homes-for-sale/">Kent County</a> is Bowers Beach, a small beach community offering plenty of recreational and fishing opportunities, or just a quiet day sitting on the sand.
There’s also a boat ramp located at Bowers Beach if you’d like to spend a relaxing day on the Delaware Bay or the nearby Murderkill River. Swimming, kayaking, and kite flying are also favorite pastimes in Bowers Beach.
And if you have time after your day on the beach, check out the Bowers Maritime Museum on Main Street, to learn more about the history of this small coastal community.
Beach Plum Island State Park
This narrow strip of beach just to the north of Lewes is actually a two-mile barrier island, and access is restricted to marked hiking trails and state-designated fishing areas (as you can see in the photo below) on the northern half of the island.
Beach Plum Island is actually one of the best-kept secrets in southern Delaware, as most tourists don’t venture north of <a href="https://www.theoldfathergroup.com/lewes-beach-homes-for-sale/">Lewes Beach</a> during their summertime vacations.
It’s located on the west side of Roosevelt Inlet in Lewes and is actually considered part of <a href="http://www.destateparks.com/park/cape-henlopen/">Cape Henlopen State Park</a>. But it's physically separated from Cape Henlopen and only accessible by driving north on Route 1 to Broadkill Road and then following Bayshore Drive to the park.
Beach Plum Island was also named the “Most Romantic Place Downstate” by Delaware Today magazine in 2009. It’s one of the most remote Delaware beaches, but you may even find remnants of a shipwreck or two while searching for that perfect spot on the beach.
It’s normally open for surf fishing and beachcombing from March through December.

Gordon’s Pond
Located within <a href="https://www.theoldfathergroup.com/cape-henlopen-state-park/">Cape Henlopen State Park</a>, Gordon’s Pond is a 900-acre great salt lagoon featuring vibrant plants, wildlife, and some of the best scenery and views in southern Delaware.
There’s also the relatively new <a href="http://destateparks.com/activities/trails/locations/cape-henlopen/index.asp#6">Gordon’s Pond Trail</a> that meanders through the area and is perfect for walking and bicycling. And it's a great way to get from Rehoboth Beach to Lewes, and back again.
As for the oceanside beach at Gordon’s Pond, you'll find plenty of spaces to enjoy a calm and relaxing day at the beach. As it is part of Cape Henlopen State Park, the beach features lifeguards between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
You'll also find two of coastal Delaware's World War II era fire control towers on the beach, so have your camera ready for some great photos.
Fenwick Island State Park
We realize that, on the surface, <a href="https://www.theoldfathergroup.com/fenwick-island-state-park/">Fenwick Island State Park</a> may be a bit out of place on our list of secluded beach areas in coastal Delaware. But hear us out…
The reason this particular state park is on our list is that, in our view, you're more likely to find a secluded piece of beachfront at Fenwick Island than at any other southern Delaware state park, particularly during the summer months.
The park is 344 acres in total, and if you’re willing to walk even just a few minutes from any of the main entrance points, you’re sure to find a nice quiet place to call home for the day.
The park also features one of the few beaches in Delaware with a designated surfing area, so Cowabunga Dude!
It’s located just north of Fenwick Island and is actually a three-mile stretch of barrier island, so pick your spot and enjoy a relaxing day on the beach.

Assateague Island State Park
Assateague Island State Park is the only destination on our list that's actually located in Maryland. It's the Free State’s only oceanfront park and many know it as the beach where wild ponies run free year-round.
But, as with Fenwick Island State Park above, a short walk either north or south from the main entry points and you’ll have the beach all to yourself.
<a href="https://dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/eastern/Assateague/Camping.aspx">Assateague Island State Park</a> also features a small campground where you can pitch a tent and spend the night. If you’re interested in this, however, be sure to call as soon as possible as the spaces are limited and often fill up very quickly.
<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/2282/image/uploads/agent-1/Assateague Island - WikiWand Photo.jpg" alt="" width="863" height="576" class="img_box_center" />
Holts Landing State Park
Holt’s Landing is another gem of Delaware’s state park system and features 203 acres situated along the shores of the <a href="https://www.theoldfathergroup.com/indian-river-bay/">Indian River Bay</a>.
The park’s claim to fame is that it features the only pier on Delaware’s inland bays built specifically for crabbing rather than fishing. But it also has a small and quiet beachfront (2,000 feet worth) where relaxation and serenity rule the day.
Holt’s Landing is also a very popular picnicking spot during the warm weather months, and you’ll find picnic tables and grills located throughout the park. There are also several trails throughout Holt's Landing, popular for walking and bicycling.
And how’s this for something extra? You can even rent a “recreation equipment bag” directly from the park, which includes horseshoes, soccer balls, Frisbees, and more.
James Farm Ecological Preserve
We don’t want to say we saved the best for last, because we love all of our magnificent beach areas here in coastal Delaware and Maryland, but the <a href="https://www.inlandbays.org/projects-and-issues/all/james-farm-preserve/%20">James Farm Ecological Preserve</a> is certainly one of the best locations our area has to offer.
Kind of falling into the “best-kept secret” category, James Farm is not usually all that crowded. But it is a coastal oasis on the shores of the Indian River Bay that really has a little bit of everything.
From the seven distinctive trails to the low marshland, the loblolly pines and so much more, James Farm is really a coastal paradise here in coastal Delaware.
But it makes this particular list today because of its quiet and serene stretch of beach. It takes a little bit of walking to get there, but once you do, it’s well worth the extra effort.
James Farm is accessible every day from sunrise to sunset and is open to the public free of charge.
The Delaware and Maryland beaches offer a little bit of something for everyone, whether you're looking to keep busy or just want a little quiet time all to yourself.

They come from many different backgrounds, but all have one very special thing in common - they're all either conducting, or hoping to conduct, real estate transactions here at the Delaware and Maryland beaches.
We're extremely proud of the fact that we're consistently ranked as one of the top local firms in terms of buyer represented sales, but a lot of our work is also focused on cultivating and taking excellent care of our clients who are wishing to sell their properties for one reason or another.
With 14 years of experience in the coastal Delaware, and now Maryland, marketplace, we've seen just about everything imaginable. Because of this, we can offer a great deal of expert advice for clients who have chosen to list their homes with us here at the Oldfather Group.
Many times, transactions go smoothly and sellers encounter barely a bump in the road. But in other cases, mistakes are made that can hamper and delay the sale of a home or property.
Today, we want to discuss a few of those potential pitfalls, which we can hopefully help you to avoid. These are issues that consistently rank as the most frequent reasons why homes aren't sold as quickly, and for as high of a price, as homeowners might like.
Let's take a look...
The Home is Overpriced. This is a very common issue and one that can definitely make selling your home in a timely fashion much more difficult. If you have time to sit and wait for the perfect buyer, this may not be as big of an issue for you. But if you need to sell your home so you can move to your new home, or even out of the area, consider working together with your real estate agent to set just the right price. You want to get the absolute top dollar for your home, and we certainly understand that, but consider pricing it at a level that will allow for some wiggle room during the negotiation process, but won't drive a number of potential buyers away because of a set price that's higher than it maybe should be.
<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/2282/image/uploads/agent-1/For Sale Sign.jpg" alt="" width="863" height="383" class="img_box_center" />
Difficulty Setting a Showing Time. If you have your home for sale, you definitely need to show some flexibility when it comes to allowing people to walk through and view it. If you have potential buyers who are interested and want to view your home, they could easily get frustrated if they're continuously denied access to the property. If you're still living in the home, we get that not every hour of the day is going to be convenient, but there does need to be several times during the week that potential buyers can enter your home. If they can't see the home, they can't buy it, right?
<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/2282/image/uploads/agent-1/Showing Home.jpg" alt="" width="872" height="460" class="img_box_center" />
Too Much Clutter. If your home is for sale, you definitely want it to look as good as possible. And having a lot of clutter around is definitely not good for the selling process. If you have a lot of stuff, consider downsizing. Or if you just have a lot of personal belongings, consider renting a storage unit, as least temporarily, to make your home as clean as as clutter-free as possible for potential buyers
<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/2282/image/uploads/agent-1/Clutter.jpg" alt="" width="751" height="320" class="img_box_center" />Spouses Cleaning Houses Photo
Unpleasant Odors. While you may love your pets and consider them valuable members of your family, having a dirty litter box or excessive amounts of dog hair in the home will cast off an odor that will make your home less attractive to potential buyers. Consider doing a deep clean prior to opening your home for visits, or at least buying a number of fragrant candles to mask some of the smells your home and/or animals may be exhibiting. Mold, mildew, bathroom odors and garbage are other potential pitfalls.
<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/2282/image/uploads/agent-1/Dogs.jpeg" alt="" width="868" height="578" class="img_box_center" />
Unwillingness to Negotiate. We know that you want to get the asking price for your home, or maybe even a little bit more if more than one buyer is interested. But that's not always going to happen, and you usually need to be willing to negotiate the price for a contract to be ratified. This is where the "wiggle room" we talked about earlier comes into play. If an offer is made that you don't think is high enough, make a counter offer and go from there, until hopefully a price can be negotiated that is acceptable to both parties.
<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/2282/image/uploads/agent-1/Handshake.jpeg" alt="" width="870" height="581" class="img_box_center" />
Refusal to Make Repairs. If there are issues that need to be addressed in your home or on your property, these will often need to be addressed by the seller prior to sale. If issues arise during a home inspection, you can also lower the price to compensate or even offer a financial incentive to an interested and qualified buyer. But just try to be flexible and open to at least discussing the issue. A flat out refusal to make needed repairs on the property will likely not sit well with potential buyers.
<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/2282/image/uploads/agent-1/Hammer.jpeg" alt="" width="877" height="658" class="img_box_center" />
Selling your family home can be a daunting process for anyone, and we know and understand that difficulties can arise during the selling process. But the point of this blog entry is to convey that at least a moderate amount of flexibility is often required in order to sell your home in the fastest manner and for the best price.
As always, we're here to help. Give us a call today at 302-260-2000 with any questions and/or comments, or if we can help you in any way.
From all of us at the Oldfather Group - we hope you have a great day here in the coastal region.2018-08-07T02:11:00-07:002020-10-20T09:52:57-07:00Dustin Oldfathertag:theoldfathergroup.com,2012-09-20:6154When It Comes to Your Home's Value, Some 'Improvements' Are Better Than OthersIf you're like most of us, your home is one of the most valuable things that you own. So it stands to reason that taking care of it over the years is of utmost importance.
And that leads us to home improvements, which probably anyone who has ever owned a home has undertaken. Some are minor, like replacing wallpaper with a fresh coat of paint or ripping up your carpeting to expose or lay beautiful new hardware floors.
Others are more extensive, of course, and can range from upgrading your kitchen or bathroom with new fixtures to even something as major as adding a couple of new rooms to your home.
But did you know that some home improvements can significantly add value to your home, while others can be a bit of a "money pit?"
Today, we're going to go over some of the best, and also some of the worst, home improvements you can undertake. For our purposes today, the terms "best" and "worst" refer to whether or not they add value to your home and property.
This is especially useful information if you plan on selling your family home anytime in the near future, as you'll want to get top dollar when going through that process.
Okay, so let's take a look at the best and worst home improvements when it comes to selling your home. We'll start with the good...
New Appliances. If you're planning to sell your home, a new set of kitchen appliances can really help this important room of the home come to life. Sellers have consistently stated over the years that the kitchen is one of the most important rooms of the home when it comes to making improvements, and studies have shown they're often willing to pay a little more to avoid the hassle of making these types of purchases themselves.
<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/2282/image/uploads/agent-1/THOMPSON3-MLS-021.jpg" alt="" width="850" height="638" class="img_box_center" />
Granite Countertops. Staying in the all-important kitchen, granite countertops have become very popular over the last decade or two and are almost always a good decision when it comes to improving the look and feel of your kitchen. And they certainly hold their value, with this important improvement also ranking high on buyers' wish lists.
<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/2282/image/uploads/agent-1/Granite Countertops.jpeg" alt="" width="850" height="567" class="img_box_center" />
Hardwood Flooring. We mentioned this above in our introduction, but hardwood flooring is all the rage these days. Carpeting is still preferred in certain instances, but you can't go wrong by installing some gleaming hardwood in a few rooms of your home. And you also don't have to worry about choosing a color of carpeting that sellers are going to like. If you want to make an improvement to your home that will have lasting value, hardwood flooring is definitely a good choice.
<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/2282/image/uploads/agent-1/SANDHILL-MLS-059.jpg" alt="" width="850" height="638" class="img_box_center" />
Master Bathroom. Aside from the kitchen, bathrooms are probably the most important rooms of the home to keep upgraded and looking nice. Consider adding a new jacuzzi tub, or an expanded shower or a double vanity or whatever else will spruce up the look and feel of your master bathroom, or even other bathrooms in the home. Improvements like this tend to hold their value during the selling process.
<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/2282/image/uploads/agent-1/THOMPSON3-MLS-049.jpg" alt="" width="850" height="638" class="img_box_center" />
Walk-In Closets. If you have any extra space in the master bedroom, consider converting some of it to a walk-in closet before listing your home for sale. Studies over the years have shown that this is a popular feature for potential buyers and something that is mentioned frequently in surveys. So if you have the space, this is a home improvement that could definitely be worth your time and money.
<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/2282/image/uploads/agent-1/Walkin Closet.jpeg" alt="" width="850" height="567" class="img_box_center" />
Okay, we've discussed the good, now it's time to turn the tables and look at a few home improvements that are certainly not the best of ideas, at least in terms of recouping your investment when selling the property.
Here are the top, or should we say bottom, home improvement projects on our list...
Swimming Pools. A pool can provide countless hours of fun and entertainment for you, your family and your friends. In those terms, you certainly can't discount the investment. But in terms of recouping your investment when you sell the property, adding a pool is certainly not a great choice. They're costly to add, costly to maintain and, even though you may love it, not all buyers are going to want the added responsibility of caring for a swimming pool.
<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/2282/image/uploads/agent-1/Swimming Pool.jpg" alt="" width="873" height="523" class="img_box_center" />
Garages. Whether it's adding a garage, expanding one or even converting one into extra living space, spending the money to alter this space is not a good financial investment. Again, if you're not planning on selling your home, then this point is moot. But if you are, and are concerned with recouping your investment, then your money can be much better spent elsewhere.
<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/2282/image/uploads/agent-1/Garage.jpeg" alt="" width="850" height="567" class="img_box_center" />
Home Office. If you work from home, converting an extra room into an office can be extremely beneficial from a work standpoint, and even as a tax break. But in terms of selling your home after making this sort of change, it can often be a costly investment. If you converted an extra bedroom to your home office, for example, potential buyers may not be able to visualize that space as a bedroom. And if they have to spend money to convert it back to a bedroom, that will likely turn them off further.
<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/2282/image/uploads/agent-1/Home Office.jpeg" alt="" width="850" height="588" class="img_box_center" />
Sun Room. This can provide a lovely space for you and your family to spend some quality time together, but an investment in a sun room rarely pays off in the long run. Experts suggest spending that money instead on a deck, which is less expensive to create, thus creating less of a financial outlay to recoup during the selling process.
<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/2282/image/uploads/agent-1/Sun Room.jpeg" alt="" width="850" height="565" class="img_box_center" />
High End Landscaping. This may dramatically improve your home's curb appeal, but what you like may not be what others like. And if the landscaping is extensive, potential buyers could be discouraged from buying the property due to the extensive work it will take to maintain it.
<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/2282/image/uploads/agent-1/Landscaping.jpeg" alt="" width="850" height="478" class="img_box_center" />
If you plan on selling your property anytime in the next few years, these are definitely tips and suggestions that you want to keep in mind in order to ensure a smooth process down the road.
As always, consult with a licensed and experienced real estate agent about these types of decisions. His or her experience will prove extremely valuable, and isn't that what you're paying for?
And please remember that the <a href="http://www.oldfatherrealestate.com">Oldfather Group</a> is here to help in any way that we can. Give us a ring today at 302-260-2000 and let us show you what we can do for you and your family.

<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/2282/image/uploads/agent-1/oldfather-group-logo.png" alt="" width="600" height="434" class="img_box_center" />2018-07-23T08:09:00-07:002021-11-28T22:53:01-07:00Dustin Oldfathertag:theoldfathergroup.com,2012-09-20:6149Oldfather Group Realtor Spouts Health Benefits of Living at the BeachFor generations, people young and old have preached about the health benefits of living at the beach, breathing the salt air, laying in the sun and generally just feeling more relaxed on a regular basis.
If you’ve ever wondered whether or not this admittedly unproven theory has any merit, Ocean City Realtor John McAdams may help you make up your mind.
Down 50 pounds since his move to the beach in 2011, McAdams now weighs the same as he did as a high school senior in 1981. He also boasts higher energy levels, a much lower cholesterol rate and a brighter outlook on life.
It’s a life that could be a whole lot different in 2018, if not for the permanent move to the beach and the advent of a healthier lifestyle.
“I was actually diagnosed with diabetes several years ago, but I never really took it seriously until my mom passed away from it,” remembers McAdams, now a Realtor with the Oldfather Group of Ocean Atlantic Sotheby’s International Realty in Rehoboth Beach. “At that point, I knew I was going to have some serious health complications down the road if I didn’t make drastic changes in my life.”
A husband and father of three, McAdams spent many a summer day in Ocean City while growing up in College Park, Maryland. Since his first trip to the resort in 1969, he knew he eventually wanted to live in the region on a permanent basis.
His lifestyle and family history of diabetes only accelerated the timetable, and today he’s reaping the benefits of that move.
An avid walker and basketball player, McAdams’ life is dramatically different since his mother’s passing. It’s a change that may have been impossible if he had continued with his job as a mortgage loan officer on the western side of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.
“I just love living here in the resort area; there’s certainly never a boring day or night in Ocean City,” McAdams says with a smile. “When I was finally able to work an entire day and then spend time at the beach without feeling exhausted, I knew things were working out the way I had planned. And I’ve been doing that for the last five years now.”
A rejuvenated life filled with healthier options and exercise has also become a major part of the Ocean City Realtor’s daily routine.
Even his wife, Debbie, his son and his twin daughters have gotten involved in the new lifestyle, also eating and living healthier at the beach.
Says the 54-year-old Realtor: “The fresh air and the environment here just makes you want to get outside and be active. “You can walk on the boardwalk or on the beach, play tennis or basketball or any number of other activities and basically just enjoy living at the beach.”
McAdams obtained his Maryland real estate license in 2014 after 18 years working in the mortgage loan business. He came on board with the Oldfather Group in 2017 and today focuses on the Ocean City residential real estate market, along with colleague Sherry Thens.
He has no regrets leaving his former profession to focus on sales, citing increased governmental regulations as the main reason for wanting to make a change.
“New regulations definitely created a lot of additional burdens in the loan business, so I’m very happy that I obtained my license and made the change that I did,” says McAdams. “And now I love the fact that I can help people achieve their dreams and assist them in making the biggest purchase they’ll probably ever make.
“It’s a really good feeling to help new homeowners add something of such significant value to their lives.”
The Oldfather Group was founded in 2004 and specializes in real estate sales throughout coastal Delaware, including Lewes, Rehoboth Beach, Dewey Beach, Bethany Beach and Fenwick Island, as well as the coastal Maryland towns of Ocean City and Berlin and northern New Castle County.

Have a great weekend everyone!2017-11-08T05:03:00-07:002021-12-03T15:56:01-07:00Dustin Oldfathertag:theoldfathergroup.com,2012-09-20:6112Jazz Festival, Apple Scrapple Highlight One of the Greatest Festival Weekends of the YearTwo gems of southern Delaware’s fall festival season take center stage this weekend as both the Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival and Bridgeville’s Apple Scrapple Festival return for their 2017 runs.
Each festival draws thousands of visitors from throughout Delaware, as well as surrounding states, and contribute significantly to the local economy during the so-called “extended season” between Labor Day and mid-November.
There are other events on the schedule as well, most notably the CAMP Rehoboth Block Party on Baltimore Avenue, but these two are certainly the belles of the ball for the next few days here in coastal Delaware.
Southern Delaware’s fall festivals keep visitors coming to our area long after the traditional Memorial Day to Labor Day summer season has ended, and really helps to make the Delaware beach area more of a year-round destination than in years past.
And these festivals that anchor the second weekend in October are two of the best and the biggest of the fall. Even better – since the Jazz Festival is held over four days and Apple Scrapple encompasses two, there’s plenty of time to get out and visit them both.
We think you’ll be glad that you did!
Now, on to one of the greatest festival weekends of the year in southern Delaware. Here are our choices for the weekend of Oct. 13-15:
Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival (October 12-15). The “Nation’s Summer Capital” will be filled this weekend with the smooth sounds and easy listening of some of the area’s finest jazz music. This year welcoming 2017 Grammy Award winner Lalah Hathaway, along with perennial favorites like Boney James and much more, the 2017 Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival is held over four days and at various locations throughout Rehoboth and Dewey Beach.
This popular annual event always brings record crowds to coastal Delaware, with many nationally known jazz musicians, as well as countless local favorites, taking the stage each year.
Shows for 2017 will be held at several different sites, including Cape Henlopen High School, Rehoboth Beach Elementary School, the Rusty Rudder, the Bottle & Cork and Epworth United Methodist Church. Plus there will be many local restaurants and bars offering great entertainment. For the full schedule and list of performers this year, visit <a href="http://www.rehobothjazz.com/">www.rehobothjazz.com</a>.
<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/2282/image/uploads/agent-1/Rehoboth Jazz Festival.jpeg" alt="" width="870" height="616" class="img_box_center" />
Apple Scrapple Festival (October 13-14). This is one of the biggest events of southern Delaware's fall festival season and is one surely not to be missed. Ranked by national publications as one of the top 100 festivals in the United States, this quirky event centers on the two things tiny Bridgeville is known for – <a href="http://www.tssmithandsons.com/">T.S. Smith Apples</a> and <a href="http://www.rapascrapple.com/">RAPA Scrapple</a>.
Activities include a car show, food vendors, craft vendors, carnival rides, live music and a special "Scrapple Slinging" contest among many of the area's mayors and civic leaders.
This year marks the 26th anniversary of the event and is still FREE to attend and also FREE to park. For more information on the 2017 Apple Scrapple Festival, visit <a href="http://www.applescrapple.com/">www.applescrapple.com</a>.

CAMP Rehoboth Block Party (October 15). Never let it be said that the folks at <a href="http://www.camprehoboth.com/">CAMP Rehoboth</a> don’t know how to throw a party. Now one of the organization’s main annual fundraisers, this year’s Block Party will be held on Baltimore Avenue and will feature dozens of restaurants, caterers and businesses participating.
This third annual event is scheduled for 12 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 15. For more information, contact CAMP Rehoboth at 302-227-5620.
<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/2282/image/uploads/agent-1/camp rehoboth block party.jpg" alt="" width="870" height="435" class="img_box_center" />
SDTR Country Barn Dance (October 14). Scheduled for 6:30 to 11 p.m. this Saturday, Oct. 15, at the Southern Delaware Therapeutic Riding Arena on Harbeson Road in Milton, this event features live music, raffles, a cash bar, line dancing and much more.
Tickets are $40 and can be purchased at the door, or in advance at <a href="http://www.sdtrhr.com/">www.sdtrhr.com</a>.
All proceeds from this event benefit the work being done at <a href="http://www.sdtrhr.com/">Southern Delaware Therapeutic Riding</a>, an organization that provides equine-assisted therapy to disabled children and adults in southern Delaware.

The season sure went by quickly, as it always does, but we think you'll agree that it's been a fantastic few months here in coastal Delaware.
And while the passing of the traditional summer season can be a sad moment, marked by the always entertaining Bethany Beach Jazz Funeral next weekend, it also means the start of a couple of new seasons that we think you'll enjoy. And those are...
The so-called "Locals Summer," which generally lasts for all of September and into early October
The 2017 Southern Delaware Fall Festival Season, which will last into early November
So while the Memorial Day to Labor Day summer season may be coming to an end, there's still plenty of fun to be had here in Delaware's coastal region. So don't put away those summer clothes just yet - we've still got some great things on tap for the next few months.
