Weekend Happenings in Coastal Delaware (August 29-30)
Well, a wonderful summer of 2015 in coastal Delaware is beginning to wind down. Most of the kids are back in school and attention is now turning to autumn, to football season and to crisp, cool evenings on or near the beach.
But it's also the time of year when many of coastal Delaware's biggest festivals are held, and we'll be keeping you informed on all of them in the coming weeks here in our "Weekender Blog." For a sneak peak into what's on deck at the Delaware beaches, also check out our "Favorite Festivals" blog entry from a couple of weeks ago. Lots of great events on tap for the fall to be sure.
For this week, we have a fun festival in Lewes highlighting some of the area's finest craft breweries, as well as a couple of events just across the state line in Ocean City for your consideration.
Also take note that the movies on the beach have ended for the season in Dewey Beach, but are still going strong in nearby Bethany Beach, and will be for a few weeks yet. So take advantage of them before they end for the season.
Now, on to this week's selections:
Beers By the Bay Craft Beer Festival (August 29). Held on both sides of the Delaware Bay, this festival showcases great craft breweries, local food and live entertainment from both Delaware and neighboring New Jersey. The Cape May portion of the event will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., while the Lewes portion is scheduled for 4 to 8 p.m. More than 20 breweries will be featured during the course of the day, so come thirsty! OC Sandfest (August 29-30). OC Sandfest features giant sand sculptures all along the Ocean City boardwalk. Several champion sculptors have come to the Maryland resort for this annual event, so be sure to bring your cameras for some wonderful photo opportunities. This weekend marks the final two days of the weeklong event, with sand sculpting classes scheduled, as well as other fun events such as the illumination of this year's creations. North American Sea Glass Festival (August 29-30). There's no questioning the mystique of sea glass in coastal Delaware, as witnessed by the successful event now held each summer at the Lewes Historical Society. This year in Ocean City, the 10thAnnual North American Sea Glass Festival will feature an eclectic mix of collectors, artists, authors, exhibitors and speakers, all celebrating the unique hobby that is collecting and transforming the special glass that can only by created by Mother Ocean. The festival is planned for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. Visit the North American Sea Glass Association for more information.
Lewes Maritime Walking Tour (August 29). One of the oldest and most interesting towns in the mid-Atlantic, Lewes has a history unlike any other. And you can experience this history via a special tour offered by the Lewes Historical Society. Journey through the town's past while learning of the explorers who first put Lewes on the map, the pirates that sailed the local waters and the local men who risked their lives saving victims from offshore shipwrecks. This 90-minute tour also includes admission to both the Lewes Lifesaving Station and the Cannonball House. The tour begins this Saturday at 1 p.m. Visit the Lewes Historical Society for more information.
Movie Night on the Beach (August 31). Held every Monday night during the season, these family-friendly movies are fun for everyone. Bring your family, a blanket, and some popcorn to the beach for family movie night! Movies will start at approximately 8:30 p.m. on the beach at Garfield Parkway in Bethany Beach. This week's selection is Walt Disney's "Finding Nemo."
These are just a few of this weekend's fun-filled events here in coastal Delaware. For more ideas on what you can do with your friends and/or family, contact your local chamber of commerce or town hall.
And be on the lookout again next week for more great ideas from the Oldfather Group. Now get out there and enjoy all the things that make living at the Delaware beaches such a wonderful experience!
